Much like anticipated in the days preceding the match, this was hard-fought and tightly-contested battle. The Spanish working their way with their short passing tactics, attempting to penetrate a well-organized (yes, you have read correctly!) Italian defense lead by Christian Panucci and Giorgio Chiellini, while on the other end the creativity of Antonio Cassano and lay-up work of Luca Toni tried to hit Spain on counter-attacks. Carlos Marchena and Carles Puyol were however keeping close guard as well and at the end of the day, there weren’t many real chances to make the highlights reel. Mauro Camoranesi had a good rotating strike inside the box (saved by Casillas) and there was a long-range blast by Marcos Senna (parried, then fumbled by Buffon onto the post). Other than that, a lot of ball possession and many shots wide for Spain.

Spain beat Italy 4-2 on penalties here on Sunday to reach the Euro 2008 semi-finals and in so doing break a number of painful hoodoos.
Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas saved penalties from Daniele De Rossi and Antonio Di Natale before Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas buried the winning spot-kick after the match had ended 0-0 after extra-time.

Onto the last quarter final of the UEFA Euro 2008 and this one has Group D winners, Spain, who won all 3 of their matches. Their opponents are world champions Italy. They left qualification late until a 2-0 win over France in their final game.
Roberto Donadoni was missing influencial midfielders Grande Gutusso and Andres Pirlo as they both recieved their second booking of the tournament vs the team they defeated in the World Cup final. Luis Aragonés on the other hand goes back to his original line up after playing the reserves in their dead rubber game vs Greece, which they won thanks to goals from Ruben de la Red and Daniel Guiza.
At the 10 minute mark, Spain had a shocking 72% to ITaly`s 28% possession. BUt despite having so much more of the ball, they had not done much with it.

And for our friends from Spain:

Portugal came into the match favorites, after storming past the group stage, with impressive displays against the Turks and the Czechs in Group play. The Germans, on the other hand looked out of their element in the Group stage, having lost to Croatia. The Germans made three changes pre-match, including finally taking out ‘Super Mario’ Gomez, while the Portuguese stayed with the same lineup that did them wonders in their first two matches. However, as the match started and Joakim Lowe watched from the stands, the Germans took the match to the Portuguese. They simply dominated proceedings early on, and finally, on a string of beautiful one touch passes leading to the feet of Lukas Podolski, he crossed it in towards the recently suspended Bastian Schweinsteiger, and he simply beat Paulo Ferriera to the ball, and struck it past the stranded Ricardo for a 1-0 lead.

Euro 2008: The ramblings of some random, misinformed American

Perhaps it was never to be Portugal year to win European Championship 2008. So much promise, so much hype around the players, and none greater than its star Cristiano Ronaldo. Yet to be honest, the 2-3 scoreline in Germany’s favor flattered Portugal.

in My Royal Way

Germany beat Portugal 3-2 in the first quarterfinal match of Euro 2008 here on Thursday, braving into the semifinals of the 24-day tournament.
Midfielder Bastian Schwienseiger and sriker Miroslav Klose scored in the first half while captain Michael Ballack regained the lead with a score in the second half to gift Germany of the surprising victory.
Portugal, which finished as winners of the Group A, found face back with two scores, one from captain Nuno Gomes in the 39th minute, the other from Helder Postiga’s header in the 87th minute.

Russia is celebrating a thrilling 2-0 win over Sweden and the country’s first European Quarter Final place in modern history. Andrey Arshavin and Roman Pavlyuchenko both scored in a game dominated by Russia. Sweden had few chances to score while Russia missed countless opportunities.

in Everything Russia

Russia paved there way in the quarter final & set up a fantastic football match with Holland with this more than easy win over Sweden. This bring Guss Hiddink against his native country & what will be a interesting match. Sweden on the other hand were very poor couldn’t handle Russia at all & they don’t know where they go from here but as a ageing team they don’t look like a team that could improve in the future or have any starts in the waiting.

in UK live football results

Andrei Arshavin returned from suspension to earn Russia a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 with victory over Sweden in Innsbruck.
Sweden only needed a point themselves but had no answer to the Zenit St Petersburg playmaker, with Dutchman Guus Hiddink now set to face Holland on Saturday after guiding Russia out of Group D.
Roman Pavlyuchenko opened the scoring at Stadion Tivoli Neu before Arshavin sealed the win Russia required after the break.
Since starting to compete as Russia, in 1992, it is the first time they have been out of the group stages of a major tournament.

And for our friends from Russia:

Croatia have steamed into the Quarter Finals of Euro 2008 after stunning tournament favourites Germany 2-1. Croatia took the lead off the boot of Darijo Srna. Ivica Olic then doubled the score for Croatia before Lukas Podolski gave the Germans a late consolation goal. Germany must now beat Austria to assure themselves of a quarterfinal berth. In another group B match, Austria held Poland to a 1-1 draw via an injury time penalty strike from substitute Ivica Vastic. Earlier, Roger Guerreiro had scored for Poland.

in Unanswerable Questions

Croatia bristled with imagination and inspiration as they dealt Germany a 2-1 Euro 2008 Group B defeat here on Thursday in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far.
The Croats were well worth their victory – which came 10 years after the biggest result in their history when they beat the same opponents 3-0 in the World Cup quarter-finals – as they took charge of the group and are now almost guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals.
Coach Slaven Bilic, who played in the 3-0 win in Lyon in 1998, said the Germans should not be written off.

in SoccerNews

Well what a night. As if defeating Germany wasn’t good enough, but a late late penalty converted by Ivica Vastic (karma anyone?) saw us not only qualify for quarterfinals, but qualify as group winners regardless of how our match with Poland plays out (head to head is the first criteria).

And for our friends from Kroatia:

No Hrvatska se brzo oslobodila tog pritiska i ponovno preuzela inicijativu. To je uostalom I potvrdio naš ugledni sudacki kriticar Mateo Beusan.

Italy clinched a quarter-final meeting with Spain as they sent France crashing out of Euro 2008 with a deserved win.
France had a nightmare evening, losing key man Franck Ribery to a serious injury after only seven minutes.
Eric Abidal was then sent off after 25 minutes for fouling Luca Toni to give away a penalty, scored by Andrea Pirlo. Thierry Henry deflected in Daniele De Rossi’s 30-yard free-kick just past the hour as the world champions joined the group winners Holland in the quarters.
Raymond Domenech’s side carried all the appearance of a spent force and their display will now surely herald a changing of the guard for a group of players that has enjoyed so much success.
Italy, in contrast, celebrated their recovery from an opening defeat against the Dutch to move into the last eight – although they will lose influential midfield pair Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso through suspension.

in Nuckfut’s bbbb-lll-ooo-ggg

The Azzurri’s Euro 2008 adventure continues to the Quarter-Finals. With rage. That of Andrea Pirlo, master sniper from the spot, and Daniele De Rossi, serving a thundering set-piece drive into the net.
It would be hasty to say “the World Champions are back”, but they’re on the right track. Today, the team looked in better shape, more motivated, more concentrated. And luck, the factor the Azzurri were so cruelly lacking until now, finally lent a helping hand to Roberto Donadoni & Co. France’s match went from bad (Franck Ribery’s injury in the 10th) to worse (Eric Abidal’s foul on Luca Toni inside the box, and resulting red card) in less than 15 minutes, and Thierry Henry’s deflection on Daniele De Rossi’s 62nd-minute free-kick was just the ultimate insult for Raymond Domenech, who will undoubtedly have to step down following his team’s elimination.

No surprises in the last matches of the Group C of the UEFA Euro Cup 2008. France lost against Italy. Italy played, as usual and to the bore of football fans, defense and to throw themselves to the floor each time they could to try to cheat the referee.
And as usual, Italy got their pass to the quarter finals of the UEFA Euro Cup 2008, with an accidental goal and with no football at all. France on the other hand, was one of the worse teams of the UEFA Euro Cup 2008. I am sure that even Austria or Switzerland could have defeated the French team.

And for our friends from Italy:
