Spain has finally shaken their decades-long underacheiver tag with their first major trophy in 44 years. It is a far different Spain who celebrates tonight from the nation who won the European title in 1964 under the repressive fascist regime of General Francisco Franco — a man who saw success in football as a utilitarian way to sow the superficial seeds of national unity. Tonight’s win is the first under Spanish democracy, the notion of which was harmoniously reflected in the open, pass-oriented play the national side displayed throughout the Euro 2008 tournament. While they may not have been watching on big screens in the squares of the Basque city Bilbao or the Catalan capital Barcelona, you can bet that the majority of the citizens of even these separatist regions were glued to their TV sets to watch Catalan players (Xavi, Puyol, and Fabregas) join with Castillian players (Torres, Casillas) to cement the nation’s place in football history.
Spain beat Germany by 1-0 in EURO 2008 Finals to hold the cup for the first time in 44 years in Vienna. With this win Spain also continued their 100% winning streak.
A solitary goal from Fernando Torres in the 33rd minute was enough to hold off a German side who rarely looked like scoring as Spain had the majority of the chances in the second half.
A first-half goal from Liverpool’s Fernando Torres was enough to beat a defensively inept German side in Vienna. Torres struck just after the half hour mark, after muscling his way past Lahm and poking it over the advancing Lehmann.
Predictably the match started as a relatively scrappy affair, with neither team able to take the initiative. Nerves were surely playing a big part, as both Germany and Spain tried to ‘play themselves in’. Spain were seeing a lot of the ball, but were happy to play it around at the back, while the German’s were closing down quickly, and attempting to gain some early control.

And for our friends from Spain:

Germany – you jammy bastards! I’m really feeling for Turkey right now, yet again they played a key part in one of the tournament’s most dramatic games, making the most of their limited resources that were even more depleted than usual through injuries and suspensions brought on by lung-busting efforts in previous games.
And bloody hell did they push Germany hard tonight. In fact, for a long time, the tournament favourites barely saw the ball. Turkey could already have been ahead before Boral knocked in, and when Schweinsteiger equalised there was a strong sense of it coming against the run of play. Klose gave them the lead following Rustu’s cock-up, but you almost knew that there was another twist – Semih making it 2-2. Shame there was one more twist after that, as Lahm compensated for a poor game defensively by scoring with a great finish.

Turkey found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline in yet another exciting Euro 2008 match. I cannot remember a tournament that has had so many last minute goals to decide a match.
In the Euro 2008 semifinal between Germany and Turkey it looked as though the match was heading into extra time before a late goal to Germany’s Philipp Lahm settled the affair in the 90th minute. This time there was no amazing comeback from Turkey.
The fact that Turkey had levelled the match with an 86th-minute strike from Semih Sentürk was dramatic enough.
You would have been a supreme optimist to think the Turkish side would be able to summon one last dramatic equaliser. You can only do this so many times. Just like the run of Dinara Safina in the French Open where twice she came back from seemingly lost positions it is tough to do it four times running.
Germany coach Joachim Löw said his side were lucky to book a place in the Euro 2008 final with their last-gasp 3-2 semi-final win against Turkey on Wednesday.
“Turkey were very strong technically and there were sections of the game when we couldn’t get a grip,” Löw said after watching his team fight back from conceding an early goal before securing victory with a 90th-minute Philipp Lahm goal.
“We saw how Turkey had come back three times at this tournament to turn games completely on their head, so we knew what was coming. In the last few minutes we were trembling but we were lucky enough to score in the 90th minute.
“We were pretty convinced then that they wouldn’t be able to come back for a fourth match.”
“Turkey were combining excellently in midfield, though, so I thought it was the right choice to stick with one forward and not sacrifice our strength in midfield,” the coach added.

Portugal came into the match favorites, after storming past the group stage, with impressive displays against the Turks and the Czechs in Group play. The Germans, on the other hand looked out of their element in the Group stage, having lost to Croatia. The Germans made three changes pre-match, including finally taking out ‘Super Mario’ Gomez, while the Portuguese stayed with the same lineup that did them wonders in their first two matches. However, as the match started and Joakim Lowe watched from the stands, the Germans took the match to the Portuguese. They simply dominated proceedings early on, and finally, on a string of beautiful one touch passes leading to the feet of Lukas Podolski, he crossed it in towards the recently suspended Bastian Schweinsteiger, and he simply beat Paulo Ferriera to the ball, and struck it past the stranded Ricardo for a 1-0 lead.

Euro 2008: The ramblings of some random, misinformed American
Perhaps it was never to be Portugal year to win European Championship 2008. So much promise, so much hype around the players, and none greater than its star Cristiano Ronaldo. Yet to be honest, the 2-3 scoreline in Germany’s favor flattered Portugal.

Germany beat Portugal 3-2 in the first quarterfinal match of Euro 2008 here on Thursday, braving into the semifinals of the 24-day tournament.
Midfielder Bastian Schwienseiger and sriker Miroslav Klose scored in the first half while captain Michael Ballack regained the lead with a score in the second half to gift Germany of the surprising victory.
Portugal, which finished as winners of the Group A, found face back with two scores, one from captain Nuno Gomes in the 39th minute, the other from Helder Postiga’s header in the 87th minute.

Croatia have steamed into the Quarter Finals of Euro 2008 after stunning tournament favourites Germany 2-1. Croatia took the lead off the boot of Darijo Srna. Ivica Olic then doubled the score for Croatia before Lukas Podolski gave the Germans a late consolation goal. Germany must now beat Austria to assure themselves of a quarterfinal berth. In another group B match, Austria held Poland to a 1-1 draw via an injury time penalty strike from substitute Ivica Vastic. Earlier, Roger Guerreiro had scored for Poland.
Croatia bristled with imagination and inspiration as they dealt Germany a 2-1 Euro 2008 Group B defeat here on Thursday in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far.
The Croats were well worth their victory – which came 10 years after the biggest result in their history when they beat the same opponents 3-0 in the World Cup quarter-finals – as they took charge of the group and are now almost guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals.
Coach Slaven Bilic, who played in the 3-0 win in Lyon in 1998, said the Germans should not be written off.

Well what a night. As if defeating Germany wasn’t good enough, but a late late penalty converted by Ivica Vastic (karma anyone?) saw us not only qualify for quarterfinals, but qualify as group winners regardless of how our match with Poland plays out (head to head is the first criteria).
And for our friends from Kroatia:
No Hrvatska se brzo oslobodila tog pritiska i ponovno preuzela inicijativu. To je uostalom I potvrdio naš ugledni sudacki kriticar Mateo Beusan.
