Russia, the team which – despite its recent form – had to be considered the underdog in this, its biggest match in years, pulled off a stunning victory over tournament favourites the Netherlands, to move into the semi-finals of Euro 2008.
The Dutch looked somewhat unsettled even at the beginning of the match, especially after Zhirkov whistled a free kick that took a real effort from van der Sar to tip away. Kolodin looked intent on proving that he’s got a cannon in place of a leg, blasting two wicked shots from 30 and 40 yards, respectively (again, van der Sar had to be very sharp to tip the first one over the bar.) The Dutch weren’t completely inactive either, with van Nistelrooy very nearly opening the scoring, but inexplicably failing to get his foot on a pass into the goal area. Sneijder also had a couple of chances, as did van Persie.

Destiny beckons for Russia’s national football team as they face the biggest game in the country’s modern history. The tournament’s favourites, Netherlands, are their opponents in Euro 2008 quarter-finals in Switzerland’s Basel. Russia’s Pavluchenko, Torbinsky and Arshavin scored the goals on 56th, 112th and 116th minutes.

Saturday’s Euro 2008 quarter final affair between Russia and The Netherlands was one for the ages if you are a believer in the impossible.
Russia, a country that no one expected to progress out of the group stage had out played and eliminated the heavily favored Dutch side with a score of 3-1 slowly turning their doubters into believers.
What most expected was a highflying Dutch attack that scored nine goals in the opening round but it was Russia who held the tempo testing keeper Edwin Van der Sar throughout the first half.

Никто из трех футболистов сборной Испании, “висевших” на карточках, а именно Альваро Арбелоа, Даниэль Гуиса и Карлос Марчена, не был предупрежден в игре с Италией. Поэтому ничто не помешает им в четверг принять участие в матче с россиянами, если на то будет воля Луиса Арагонеса. У Гуса Хиддинка ситуация сложнее, ибо ему придется найти замену центральному защитнику Денису Колодину и хавбеку Дмитрию Торбинскому, которые в поединке с голландцами (3:1) получили по второму “горчичнику” на турнире.
